    Line Apprentice 1st Year – 118893


    There are 22 openings in the Indiana area. In the next section, you will be asked to indicate your preferred location from the following list: Attica, Avon, Bedford, Bloomington, Clarksville, Columbus, Connersville, Franklin, Greencastle, Huntington, Kokomo, Lafayette, Loogootee, Martinsville, Terre Haute and Wabash.

    Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:

    •Construct, maintain, and repair electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines.
    •Install and repair electrical equipment such as street lighting and load control devices.
    •Construct overhead and underground distribution lines based on engineering specifications, including setting poles, pulling cable, setting transformers, etc.
    •Install equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, load control devices, meters, street lights, safe lights, etc.
    •Maintain and repair equipment such as checking and doing preventative maintenance. Also involves using test equipment such as volt and amp meters to measure the performance of equipment.
    •Respond to trouble calls when equipment fails and/or electrical service is interrupted.

Duke Energy will provide you a response within five (5) business days of having received your written request. In the event Duke Energy has not yet received the requested information from your previous employer(s), the five (5) business day response time shall begin upon Duke Energy’s receipt of the requested safety performance history. If you submit a request for your safety performance history but do not make arrangements to pick up or receive such requested records within thirty (30) days of Duke Energy making such information available to you, you waive your request.


    Basic Qualifications
    •Valid driver’s license.
    •Ability to stand 5-6 hours on ground, in a bucket on a line truck, or at the top of a distribution pole.
    •Ability to sit for 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault.
    •Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment.
    •Ability to climb distribution poles.
    •Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
    •Ability to push/pull weights up to 100 pounds.
    •Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths.
    •Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat.
    •Color vision needed.
    •Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.

    Desired Qualifications
    •Experience or training in a Trade, for example, mechanic, electrician, painter, construction, carpenter, steel working, masonry, etc.

    Specific Requirements
    •DOT Certification.
    •DOT Physical.
    •This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
    •Work schedule requires working various shifts as business needs arise.
    •Position has on-call responsibilities as scheduled and generally available at others times as needed, demonstrate the ability to work independently, and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, and in all weather conditions to perform work required during planned and emergency outages.
    •Requires ability to travel and stay overnight to various locations to assist in major storm restoration.

    Working Conditions
    •Shift work, overtime, weekend work.
    •Frequent travel.
    •Work environment ranges from indoors to outside in varying degrees of heat and cold weather conditions.
    •Emergency situations may require working at night and in inclement weather.
    •Subject to confined spaces, (manholes, vaults, etc).
    •Subject to periodic call-out duty and subject to second and third shift schedules.

    Residency Requirement

    This position has a residency requirement. The primary residence cannot be located more than twenty (20) driving miles distance from the employee’s headquarters OR located more than twenty-five (25) minutes driving time, under normal driving conditions, from the employee’s residence to the employee’s headquarters.
